FROM THE BATTLEFIELDS OF 1941
TO THE “RESTRICTED ZONE” OF THE COLD WAR, A LAND WHERE MEMORY LIVES AND FREEDOM IS HONOURED

Roupel Pass : In the footsteps of History

Roupel Pass is far more than a destination; it is a plunge into time, through the historic gateway that shaped Greece’s fate for decades.

The journey begins on the battlefields of April ’41, where the Metaxas Line was put to the ultimate test and the Greek defenders showed what endurance and honor truly mean. We walk among pillboxes, barbed wire and anti-tank obstacles, in a landscape where the earth still seems to remember the echo of the battle.

As we enter the interior of the fort, the rhythm shifts; now we descend into the underground labyrinth that once pulsed with life, anxiety and duty. Narrow tunnels, soldiers’ quarters, command posts, kitchens and observation points unfold a wartime daily life that feels like a scene from a film — yet it is entirely real. Every corridor and every chamber carries the imprint of those who served and sacrificed for freedom.
But the journey does not end in 1941.

The Roupel Gorge also takes us into the years of the Cold War, when the area became a “Restricted Zone.” New fortifications, guard posts and memories from an age of uncertainty remind us that history never truly ends; it simply changes form and face.

At Roupel Pass, history is not just something you see — it is something you feel.
It is an experience that brings you closer to the values of freedom, peace and remembrance. You leave different: more aware, more moved and carrying a deeper respect for those who wrote history on these mountains.
