The route begins with the story of the Metaxas Line. Photographs, maps and short texts bring you into the atmosphere of the era, from construction to the Battle of 1941. Small human stories revive the place and the events on Mount Belles.

Metaxas Line & Battle of the Forts

The Metaxas Line is regarded as the largest construction project undertaken in Greece during the 20th century. Although its original purpose was to deter a potential attack from neighboring Bulgaria, its fort complexes eventually faced the German invaders during the Second World War. The Battle of the Forts left its own mark on the overall outcome of the war in favor of the Allies, with the Greek defenders earning even the respect of their enemy.

Our activities are organized at regular intervals throughout the year, featuring themed programs, educational experiences and guided tours in both outdoor locations and specially designed indoor spaces. The schedule is updated frequently, so it’s best to follow our website and social media channels for the latest announcements and available dates.

What can the tours be combined with?

Our guided tours can be combined with hiking or even cycling, when conditions allow it. The hiking routes are generally manageable but do require good physical condition. Each activity includes detailed information on the kilometers, the type of route and the level of difficulty. The tour is not just informative; it’s a vivid journey into the past, where history meets adventure and culture.

Are the activities suitable for the whole family?

Our activities are family-friendly and designed to offer a meaningful shared experience for both children and adults. Children take part through exploration and playful engagement, while adults enjoy the historical narration, the documentation and the authentic atmosphere of the era. For safety reasons, and to ensure that everyone fully enjoys the program, participation is recommended for children over ten years old. If you have younger children and are unsure whether they can join, feel free to contact us — we’ll be happy to guide you and suggest the best experience for your family.

Are the activities safe?

All our activities are carried out with respect for visitor safety and with the constant presence of experienced guides. The outdoor routes follow accessible and manageable paths, allowing you to enjoy the natural environment without difficulty. Visits to the underground galleries of the Metaxas Line take place in fully inspected and structurally sound areas, with clear signage and guidance throughout the experience.
Although the space is safe, entering the galleries is not recommended for individuals with pronounced claustrophobia, as the atmosphere remains faithful to the historical environment and can feel demanding for those who are uncomfortable in confined spaces. If you have any concerns or special requirements, feel free to contact us so we can help you find the most suitable solution.

Can I enter an underground tunnel on my own?

Entering abandoned galleries of the Metaxas Line independently is not encouraged and, in practice, not permitted, as these structures are still considered military works and access remains restricted. Beyond that, for reasons of safety and respect for the historical environment, tours inside the tunnels take place only with proper guidance and supervision, ensuring that the experience is complete, safe and historically accurate. Me and the forts

The forts of the Metaxas Line are living monuments of modern Greek history and symbols of sacrifice and honor. During your visit, please show the appropriate respect: do not remove objects, cause damage, or move or collect material from within the structures. These sites are institutionally protected, and violations are prosecuted by the Military Authority.
The forts are not just concrete constructions. They are places of memory, charged with the stories of people who defended their homeland under exceptionally harsh conditions. As you explore them, you will encounter their testimonies, see authentic evidence and walk through spaces that still preserve the atmosphere of that era.
